Long, Cold Winter Wonderland

Can you believe all this snow this year? Last night on the weather we heard it has literally snowed every other day for the past month here. After suffering drought conditions for so long now in Utah, it's such a blessing! It's been a blast for my kids, too, and we all get excited every time we see those flakes begin to fall again. We've had every kind of snow this year - big, fat flakes that just coat the ground all at once - tiny shimmery flakes that look like glitter in a partly sunny sky - blizzard conditions where you can't hardly see across the street - and it's all been so fun! Although it's all snow, basically the same thing over and over, it hasn't gotten dull yet because it's all been different! It's like getting a different show every couple of days. I remember days when I was younger thinking if it would just snow a little more I'd be able to literally tunnel through, or at least have virtual "hallways" in the backyard through which we'd play the ultimate game of fox and rabbit. Then suddenly it seemed as though those kind of snow years were gone forever. It's been wonderful to welcome them back to Utah, a place where the promise of spring flowers and summer water activities are hardly threatened by the blanket of white, so you can really enjoy it while it lasts.

Let's see, what else have we been up to? Yesterday I slow-cooked a pork roast. I got up on a whim and thought I'd be so prepared for dinner last night, and then the day slipped by and we had nothing planned to go with it. Here I thought I was so on the ball. It worked out, but I laughed at how silly I was! Erick brought home the school directory and is thrilled about being able to call all his friends now to come play - I can't wait! They have such a good time and it's fun to see him so entertained. I bought our plane tickets to Saint Louis this summer on a $99 deal from Delta this morning, and am thrilled we're all going to go for under $500. Well, not all or us, as Justin will be driving out two weeks prior, but four of us. And I was glad to not be on Southwest with the kids as they've changed their pre-board policy (don't even get me started on that). The big date is June 3, and I have a feeling it will come up quickly!

Izzie's begging me for two-day-a-week gymnastics these days - I can't blame her as all that beautiful snow has made us a little stir crazy. We went to Chuck-E-Cheese a couple of weeks ago, splitting coupons with a friend, and that was kind of the highlight of their lives for the month. That and the slumber party at Grandma and Grandpa's. That was a highlight of my month, too!

Justin's doing well in his classes, and has so far been surprised at the light workload he's had for 18 credit hours. We love that he's home a little more often, too!

Yesterday Erick and I played Lego Star Wars together for something close to three hours. It's a great game, because you can go right in the middle of the game from two player to one and back again! Erick thinks I'm a videogame hero because I'm SO good, and I relish the chance because I know in another year or so I'll be completely trounced. I already can't beat him anymore at MarioKart. And so I don't feel completely guilty for rotting his brain, I have to add he's also doing great with his reading, and it's fun to see the surprise and delight on his face when he sounds out bigger words and gets them right! Last night's big one was "commandments" out of our Book of Mormon reading. He was thrilled, and his sense of accomplishment at each activity makes me just glow.

Alright, chickie. We need to get together and have a game-off. Those are my two favorite video games! (OK, honestly, they're the only two I can actually play.) Mario Karts is a Walton family staple.....we play for blood. I'll try to take it easy on you, though. Ha, ha.

We agree with the snow - for the most part. I think that as long as we are here...we should enjoy it to the max. I have loved all the different snow falls as well - the glitter kind is quite pretty, but the fluffy flakes are just awesome to watch.

That is a great deal on your plane tickets! Way to snag those at the right time...and smart to send Justin ahead with the car! I'm assuming that you are waiting here for Erik to finish school anyway - we are doing the same and then my sister's wedding is the 2 weeks after that, so we will have to see how we all get to where we need to be. I can't believe how fast it is all going to come!

It really has been a winter wonderland all year long. It was always like that growing up that we didn't think twice about it, but now to see it return it's seems crazy. What a blessing.

I love the picture from your parents front door. Such good memories.

Congrats on your great airfare. What a bargain at $99 each. That is rare.

And I love that you played video games. That is Matt's favorite, though I'm much better at Frogger. Glad I'm not the only one with paddle skills!

I remember those winters too! When there was so much snow on the ground you could literally build anything. I am glad that Utah is getting dumped on...and that I am in California while it happens.

Congrats on the tickets...I agree with you on the whole Southwest change: That deserves a good long rant.

I've been told by everyone in Utah about the crazy snow. I have to admit that I'm glad I'm not there. I'm also hoping the worst of it is over by the time we get back, which is in 9 days! I'm sure my boys will love it though. The tunnels sure do sound like a lot of fun.

That's a great deal for you plane tickets. So does that mean you have to travel with all three kids by yourself? Good luck! I haven't heard about the Southwest thing, and two of my sisters are flight attendants. Are they not allowing pre-board for kids anymore? That's crazy! Especially without assigned seating. They can't separate families like that. Okay, I won't get you started.

Good job on the reading. I loved teaching 1st grade for that reason alone. It's the time when they progress the most. No matter what level they're on.

Jenni - We love Mario Kart! We should get together one night and have a nintendo pizza party... do your boys play any? Another favorite is Super Smash Brothers, although just about anything Mario is pretty fun! The Star Wars one was a pleasant surprise. We play on a GameCube, and all the games are getting more and more difficult to find...

Summer - I feel like this whole year has just flown by! I can't believe it's Valentine's Day already, and everything has been so fun! This was a great decision for our family, and it sounds like the same for yours!

Cheryl - I've seen the frogger game a couple of times - is it fun? I'll pick one up before they're extinct if it is. I think Matt and Erick actually sound a lot alike!

And YES, Southwest has changed their pre-board policy so mothers with infants have NO special treatment whatsoever. I know, money talks, but shame on them for selling out. I'll NEVER fly southwest again if I can at all help it. That was their redeeming quality in my mind before, whether I had kids with me or not.

Amanda - reading with Erick has been so fun. I've been really surprised at how quickly he's progressed in our Book of Mormon reading! I think it may be in part because he has both his mom and dad listening in, so he really focuses and works hard. Or maybe it's the Scripture Power... whatever it is, it's really working! :-)
