This week's question is this: If you could do something dangerous just once, with no risk, what would you do? I haven't thought about this one much, but I LOVE my friend Holly's response - she'd drive without strapping the kids into their carseats! I can't imagine the time that would free up in a day! In fact, if I were to go into parenting no-nos, I'd add a few more, like leaving my kids in the car while I went grocery shopping... or heck, why not just leave them home alone altogether? And as much as that can quickly set me daydreaming, I'm going to list a few things OUTSIDE my current life and situation and just shoot the moon.

One - I would LOVE to sail the earth. I'd love to take a year or so, learn to sail, and then just go wherever my little heart desired. Maybe I'd even take the kids, and a nanny. I mean, it's my dream, right? Maybe the nanny would be Jo Frost, and I could just go with Justin to do whatever we wanted when the activities were less kid-friendly. I'd visit random ports in the Orient, the Phillipines, Europe and South America. Maybe we'd even make it to Africa, but I did say this would be just a year or so. If I knew there was no chance of anything going wrong - from theft, to storms, to pirates to sunburn - I'd start saving now.

Two - I'd get my pilot's license. I know, this is a little more tame, but I admit the thought of it scares me just little bit. A lot of people in my family, including my Grandma S, have their pilot's licenses, and I keep thinking someday maybe I'll swallow hard and do it, too.

Three - I'd like to visit the middle east and Afghanistan and really see what's going on there. No guards, no caravans... just be able to go like missionaries do - live there, acclamate, learn the language and become immersed in culture and customs in peace. I think these areas have rich cultures, histories and amazing art and artifacts, and I'm afraid we'll never have the chance to really be frendly and peaceful enough with them to appreciate them all. In fact, add to that list Dubai, because I'm intrigued by the tiny place, and although it seems to be friendlier to Americans than other countries, it would still make me nervous to live there.

Four - Speaking of Dubai, I'd like to stand on top of the Burj Dubai, just to see how far you can see from there. I'd like to feel the swaying of the top in a wind, and just know that it was manmade and amazing. Now, I don't mean from the top observation deck... I mean tie me right to the lightning rod and let me pull a "titanic" king of the world moment...
Five - I'm going to borrow this one from Cheryl - if there was no risk, I'd want to see a tornado, and possibly a hurricane and/or earthquake. Now, I don't know the odds of doing any of those things in the grandiose scale you'd want to and there NOT being any risk, but I love the storm-chaser movies on you-tube, and just hope nobody is hurt.
Wow, how do you stop at even five? Now that I'm thinking... wouldn't it be great to fly with one of the Blue Angels and to break the sound barrier? Would you like to surf an enormous wave? How would it feel to cross a swinging rope bridge across from mountain to mountain in the Andes? I think it would be awesome to visit the South Pole, or to join a scientific expedition searching for whales, or monkeys, or whatever. Too much to do, and too little time to do it all, I guess. My choices were/are elsewhere for now, but it's fun to think about. :-)

Wow...now you have me thinking! My first choice, with no risk, would be to backpack across China...staying mostly in the country side and seeing the REAL people and culture.
I would then cross back over to the Middle East and tour that area...on foot.
Climbing Everest and trekking to the South Pole.
Oh yeah...and when I get REALLY daring...I'll get married:)
Wow, everyone is so much more adventurous than me. Than again, I didn't pick mountain climbing, bungee jumping, exotic travel, etc, because the element of risk was never the reason I didn't do those things, anyway.
I almost put leave the kids home while I go out, too. The possibilities in that arena are endless!
Loved your list. I agree, once you get started the possiblities are endless. Now I can't believe I only wrote 2 down.
Getting my pilot's licence never crossed my mind. Brave girl you are.
Loved the middle east one. I actually thought about writing going to Egypt and Israel. I really am going to go there, it's just an uncertain part of the world.
OK and I've never even heard of the Burj Dubai. I'll have to google it and then sign up for a couse in history and culture. My brain is going to pot, though I can recite a lot of dialogue from many Jimmy Neutron episode. I really shouldn't be proud of that one....
Zach... I totally agree with staying in the countryside and seeing the REAL people and culture - that's a great way to say it! And LOL about getting married... too true!
Holly, I seriously thought your comment about the carseats was the most creative, off-the cuff answer I've seen! I love it! So many of my fears of risk these days center around my kids and family... if there were no risks involved with them my life would be SO different today. Medicine cabinets, child locks, helmets and kneepads, motherhood is totally about hedging risks.
Cheryl, oh, Jimmy Neutron. I know too many kids' cartoons than I'm proud to admit, too. We were pretty addicted to "Avatar, the last airbender" until we saw every episode twice, and we used to DVR "Duck Dodgers" because it was on too late for the kids to watch but we loved it. Okay, we really don't watch tv all day... but we do like some shows. :-)
