Blue and Gold...Cake

Today I officially became a cub scout mom. Not that I wasn't driving to activities every other week, or reading through the manual once a month. My memories of cub scouting when I was a lass are two-fold. I remember the pinewood derby, and I remember the blue and gold banquet cake auctions. One activity leaned heavily on the dads, the other on the moms. It's kind of a shame the Church doesn't allow auctions anymore as fundraisers because it's anti-climatic to make cute cakes just for eating, but then again I've never been much of a cakemaker so maybe it would just be additional pressure. Tonight I made my first blue and gold banquet cake. The theme was animals, or I think more specifically getting "Wild about Scouting." Naturally I chose the simplest cake I could find online that didn't involve sticking plastic animals to the top of a sheet cake. Looks fancy, right? Can you tell what it is? I mean, what it really is on the inside? Two bundt cakes, sliced in half and offset. Sweet, right? The icing is ganache, so basically dark chocolate and heavy whipping cream - it's a truffle on a cake. As one who doesn't love frosting usually this is divine. Erick provided the decoration and I think he did a bang-up job, don't you?

And after all that work, he had the nerve to eat someone else's cake! It is hard to resist marshmallow sheep cupcakes though and they were super cute.

His dad tied the neckerchief... ;-)

This was a puppy cupcake - super cute with cookie ears! Matt loved it.

This is still my favorite picture from today though, festivities and all. I had two cute little nappers crash in my livingroom while I frosted in prep for the big night. Don't they look peaceful? I think all the playing outside they've suddenly had in our 70-degree weather is catching up to them.
Notice she put her stuffed dogs to bed next to her?

And today I am grateful because Matt was delightful this evening. A nice change from the pinewood derby night for sure!
