Conference Thoughts

Okay, so today wasn't our most spiritual conference, but we had one moment certainly worth recording. During President Monson's morning talk we had a bout of mass mayhem while mom and dad tried desperately to listen and to coerce our darling children to do the same without pinching, poking or mouthing who-knows-what to each other from separate couches. Seriously, kids.

Of course it hardly seems appropriate to lash out in anger after the priesthood session, and we didn't have enough belts for them all (to tie them to their chairs, of course!) while listening to the prophet talk of love and service, so we did our best to verbally (re)enforce reverent behavior between television pauses. Granted, it made for a rather disjointed talk. When the sermon was completed we asked the kids what the prophet had spoken about.

Erick: I know, it was about reverence!
Izzie: No, it was about loving each other!
Mom (laughing): Well, mom's talk might have been about reverence, but Izzie's right. The prophet's talk was about service.
Izzie: So it was like, a trick! Mom, I can't buh-lieve you were trying to trick us like that!

Yeah, I'm so sneaky.

Also, as perfect as our older children are already (as evidenced by their conference trickery), we have had a sign we may have some work to do with our three-year-old. Last night when Justin was helping the kids with personal prayers he started with Audrey, who looked up and him, thought for a minute, then said "Dad, Heavenly Father's not really real anyway." Oh man. Darn Santa Claus. Darn the Easter Bunny and curse the Tooth Fairy. Dagger to my heart. Guess we'll keep working. :-P

Conference just isn't the same with little kids. Yesterday I was very frustrated when I didn't hear parts of talks because of their less than reverent behaviors. Today I tried hard to remember they are kids and WILL make some noise and I shouldn't get frustrated about it. Glad we aren't the only ones who don't get as much out of conference with those little kiddos running around. But then...we are being consistent and that's what they'll remember, right? (If not, I'll have them talk to Elder Bednar) Your wall looks awesome!

That is so funny.

Kathy and I had a reverence problem too. It's hard to sit for two hours without a break. We have to do something mindless like ironing clothes or playing tetris while we listen, or else I start to fidget.

We had the same issues here! The older two were doing somewhat alright, but that youngest one...he was all over the place THE WHOLE TIME!

I'm looking forward to listening to it throughout the week...when the kids are in bed, so I know it will be quiet! :)

I can just see them all. What funny kids. I burst out laughing at Audreys comment. It made me remember "she's chasing me!!!" I love that little gal. She is so funny. I can't wait to see you all again at Thanksgiving.
