Out of the closet...

Utterly ridiculous.

It's official. I'll be attending the state convention this year as a delegate for the Utah County Democrats. This one-party system in Utah is corrupt and I believe voting in some democrats will do the state more good than filling the legislature again with republicans who seem to claim some kind of religious mandate to do whatever they want - the vouchers being one glaring recent error on the part of our fearless leaders. While I am a staunch capitalist and agree/disagree with things from both parties, Utah needs political reform and this is the route I've chosen. You can read about the party here, if you're interested:

My mother is also running for legislature this year in her district and needs to beat Mike Morley. Our Provo rep in my area is Curt Bramble. I'll refrain from spouting my personal opinions on them here, but if you're interested let me know sometime. My brother Rob is working the Republican side in Springville as a county delegate this year, working for change in his area. Republican or Democrat, if you believe in a two-party system this is our chance to begin the change.

I LOVE that you are doing this. I am so proud of my family and the stance they are taking with utah politics. I hope you will inspire more people to open their eyes to what is happening in Utah!! Way to go sis!

Aggghhhh! My Eyes! I can't believe what I just read!

Just kidding...I totally support you in this. I have the greatest respect for people who stand up for what they feel is right, especially when change is needed.

Good luck!

I'm still representing Republican in Cali though.

It's okay, Zach... I think in California I'd lean republican, too on most things. I might in Missouri. I think I'm fairly conservative... and that's becoming more and more the democratic party in Utah and not the Reps. In California I'd wager it's the opposite. :-)

Thanks Shel! I'm excited!

Laura, I'm proud of you, too. Ellis and I actually both converted to the Democratic party about 5 years ago. We started out more independent, but the more we read and researched, the more staunchly Democrat we became. Frankly, I just hate how the Christian Right uses religion to further themselves (do I hear priestcrafts, anyone?)

But mostly, I agree we need more diversity politically in Utah. So I think it's great what you're doing.

That's awesome! I'd be interested in hearing more about your political ideas--I have remained VERY unattached to UT politics, knowing that we are just here for the short term, but the voucher thing did get my attention and confused me with the one-sidedness of the whole issue. We'll have to chat!

Kim, I have my voucher rant for better or for worse posted on this blog back in november, I think... it's labeled "politics". I was very proud of Utah for taking a stand and showing just how far the legislature is from representing their districts.

Jami - we'll have to talk sometime, because I agree with the religion thing. It's worse here than anywhere. But I think it's getting better all the time. Not that I think there shouldn't be a religious element there - but sometimes the democratic stance is closer to MY religion than the republican...and I admit to being surprised by that.
